Required Equipment Guide and other rules

If you or your child are starting kickboxing classes in Athy, one of the first questions is what equipment is actually required. Our Athy Kickboxing Club trains and competes under official WAKO kickboxing rules used across Ireland and Europe, so the gear you buy will also be suitable for real tournaments — not just training. The latest WAKO rules can be found on the official WAKO website.

This equipment guide is based on the WAKO Equipment Book (2022 edition). Since then, additional WAKO-approved equipment has been released and may not appear in this list. The most important thing when buying gear is to check that it is WAKO approved and carries an official WAKO Approved logo.

Different disciplines use different gloves, but most protective equipment remains the same. This guide explains exactly what beginners and advanced students need for Point Fighting, Light Contact and Full Contact, helping parents avoid buying the wrong gloves or unnecessary gear before purchasing from sports shops or online.

The goal of this guide:
👉 Buy once, use everywhere, avoid wrong purchases.

Important:
This approved model list is based on the WAKO Equipment Book (2022). New approved gear is constantly added, so always check that the product carries an official WAKO Approved logo.

Different disciplines use different gloves — but most protection stays the same.
